Why telehealth psychiatry matters in Alabama
Access to mental health care is uneven across the state. UAB's Heersink School of Medicine has pointed out that every county in central Alabama carries a federal Mental Health Provider Shortage Area designation, and that Alabama has far fewer mental health providers per person than the national average. For many Alabamians, that means long waits, long drives, or no local option at all. A video visit removes the geography: if you have a private space and a connection, you can be seen.
How it works
- Book through Headway. Choose a time and have your insurance eligibility and estimated cost verified before you're seen. Book an appointment →
- Complete your intake. Share your history, current medications, and what's bringing you in, so your visit time goes toward talking, not paperwork.
- Meet by secure video. Your first visit is a 60-minute evaluation with Jacqueline Kabukuru, DNP, PMHNP-BC, FNP-BC.
- Leave with a plan. That might include medication, supportive psychotherapy skills, lifestyle changes, or a combination. Prescriptions, when appropriate, go electronically to the pharmacy you choose.
- Follow up. Check-ins are 30 minutes and focus on how your plan is working.
Who we can see
VeraMind sees teens and adults, ages 13 to 65. Patients under 19 need a parent or guardian's consent and involvement at the first visit. Because we are licensed in Alabama, you must be physically located in Alabama at the time of every visit — if you're traveling out of state, we can't see you until you're back. Texas, Oregon, and Washington are coming soon.
What you'll need
- A phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone
- A private, quiet place and a reliable internet connection
- A list of your current medications, doses, and supplements
- The name and location of your preferred pharmacy
- Any recent records or lab results you'd like us to review
