Few things delay getting care like not knowing what it will cost. Psychiatric pricing can feel opaque, with long intake forms, surprise bills, and "it depends" answers. Here's how the costs actually break down, and exactly how pricing works at VeraMind.
What you're actually paying for
- The initial evaluation. It's the longest visit, because a good plan starts with a full history of your symptoms, health, medications, and goals.
- Follow-up visits. Shorter appointments to see how treatment is working and adjust it. Early follow-ups are usually closer together, then spaced out as you stabilize.
- Medication. Prescriptions are filled at your pharmacy and billed separately from the visit. Many commonly used psychiatric medications are available as lower-cost generics, and prices vary by pharmacy, so it's worth asking your pharmacist about options.
- Labs or other medical follow-up. Occasionally needed, and usually coordinated through your primary care provider.
VeraMind's flat-rate pricing
VeraMind uses a fixed flat-rate self-pay schedule:
- $259 — initial psychiatric evaluation (60 minutes)
- $129 — follow-up appointment (30 minutes)
As a simple illustration — not a prediction — an initial evaluation plus four follow-up visits would come to $259 + (4 × $129) = $775. How often you're seen depends on your clinical needs, and your clinician will talk with you about the schedule that makes sense. Payment methods include major credit cards, HSA cards, and Zelle.
Using insurance through Headway
VeraMind accepts commercial insurance through Headway, including Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, Carelon Behavioral Health, Curative, and select Blue Cross plans. Headway verifies your eligibility and estimated patient responsibility before your appointment, so you can see your expected cost up front. Coverage and network participation still vary by employer plan and individual policy. Verify your coverage on Headway →
What is a superbill?
A superbill is an itemized receipt, with diagnosis and procedure codes, that you can submit to your insurance company to request reimbursement for out-of-network care. Whether and how much you're reimbursed depends entirely on your plan's out-of-network benefits, so it's worth calling your insurer to ask about them before relying on one. VeraMind provides superbills on request for commercial plans.
What we don't offer
Being clear matters more than being vague. VeraMind is not enrolled with Medicare or Alabama Medicaid and is unable to accept patients covered by either. We operate strictly on the fixed flat-rate self-pay schedule above, or through accepted commercial insurance via Headway. We do not offer sliding-scale fee programs or financial hardship applications.
If cost is a barrier
If our pricing isn't workable for you right now, that doesn't mean care is out of reach. Options worth exploring include:
- Dialing 211 to be connected with local health and social services.
- Your regional community mental health center, which often provides services on income-based terms. The Alabama Department of Mental Health can point you to yours.
- SAMHSA's treatment locator at findtreatment.gov.
- 988 — call or text anytime if you or someone you know is in crisis.
